The Theresian Alumnae Center

by Ma. Regina Manalo-Tabafunda HS'85

Bahay Teresa, with proposed location at the Maria Clara St. gate near the high school parking lot, shall serve as a center that will signify the unity of the Theresian alumnae interacting with one another for a renewal of spirit and common goals.

General Objectives:

  1. To be an environment of growth and support for all Theresian alumnae
  2. To be a venue for the various activities and programs of the STAA and its members, as well as STC itself
  3. To provide an autonomous structure that will house social, environmental and health service programs that extend beyond the walls of STC.

Specific Objectives (Space Requirements and Solutions):

  1. Provide space for self-expression in the realm of arts, crafts, music, literature, etc.
-MULTI PURPOSE ROOM WITH FLEXIBLE PARTITIONING
(may be used for art and music classes, seminars, retreats, recollections, mini concerts, parties, etc. w/ maximum capacity of 70-100 persons
  2. Provide space for personal support and development (counseling, one-on-one interviews, conflict resolutions, etc)
    -MINI AND REGULAR MEETING AREAS
    (may accommodate up to 4)
  3. Provide space to showcase and archive Theresian publications and art works
    -MUSEUM AND LIBRARY
(may be incorporated in other major areas if space is limited)
  4. Provide space for the regular administrative operations of the STAA and its board members
-STAA OFFICE, CONFERENCE ROOM, LOUNGE (kitchenette, dinette, pantry, T&B)
the clerical office (for 2 persons) opens up to a board room (for 20), preferably adjacent to a bigger area that could accommodate 50-60 during batch assembly meetings
  5. Provide an area of respite and meditation
-PRAYER ROOM/ WORSHIP AND MEDITATION AREA (indoor garden)
  6. Provide area/s that could accommodate transient Theresian guests during homecoming and other STAA events
    -DORMITORY (optional- see design considerations)

Design Considerations:

  1. Autonomy (Economic Considerations)
Bahay Teresa prioritizes, among other things, providing space/s for activities that could generate income for self-support. However, income from renting out spaces beyond building maintenance and operational requirement will not be allowed by the bigger institutions of STC and ICM.
  2. Green Design and Sustainable Development (Environmental Considerations)
Bahay Teresa aims to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. The design and construction of the structure will be "eco-efficient", delivering the maximum benefit to the user, with the minimum use of resources and the least possible environmental impact.
  3. Location
Since Bahay Teresa will be situated within the institutional grounds of STC, building guidelines and restrictions shall be observed and followed from design to construction, to operation and maintenance.
  4. Form
Bahay Teresa’s form should emulate the Theresian spirit
(ex:"spirituality and quest for truth, with a deep sense of mission")

Pre Construction Requirements:

  1. Site - area, location/orientation
TCT and/or lot plan to be provided by school’s facilities manager
  2. Space Requirements - based on activities and users
  3. General Design Concepts
  4. Access and Parking
  5. Time and Cost Requirements (target schedules and budget)

Collaborative Design Approach:

  1. Participating designers shall prepare a "concept paper" that would include the ff:
    1. schematic floor plan/s
    2. perspective ( a and b with gen material specs labels)
    3. design philosophy and concepts (written explanation)
  2. Since the activity is not a competition but a contribution of ideas, each participant will be recognized as part of the Bahay Teresa Design Consulting Team
  3. Invitation shall be done via email and snail mail, as guidelines and design requirements will be attached.
  4. Deadline of submission is 2 weeks after release of invitations; email, snail mail or hand deliver design contributions to STAA office.

Bahay Teresa Perspective

Architects

Angeline "Gigi" Chua Chiaco HS 70 has consented to be the chief architect of the Bahay Teresa Project with Arch. Reena Manalo-Tabafunda HS 85 as partner in the execution of design.

Arch. Chua Chiaco was the only one of the ten alumnae-architects who was able to attend the Bahay Teresa Committee's meeting on 22 May 2009. The other alumnae-architects were unable to make it to the meeting due to prior commitments to other projects. Arch. Edda Amonoy, though present at the meeting declined to be officially named into the committee because she is not a practicing architect.

Gigi is currently a Principal Architect with the ATCC Architects firm since 1994. She topped the Government Licensure Examination for Architecture when she took it in 1976. Her work specialization is Planning & Architectural Design, Environmental Planning and Subdivision Planning. She got her B.S. Architecture degree in 1975 from the University of the Philippines where she was a recipient of several awards and scholarships. Gigi holds a Masters Degree in Urban & Regional Planning also from the University of the Philippines.

For Theresians, Gigi is noted for her design and construction of the Queen of Peace Chapel for the ICM Sisters. She is also in charge of the renovation of the Queen of Peace Residence.

Buildable Area

The following is a summary of points discussed during the Bahay Teresa Committee meeting with Architect Gigi Chua Chaco (HS '70) on May 22, 2009:

  1. Based on the size of the buildable area (+/- 402.44 sm), the estimated project construction cost shall amount to P 10M, at P 25,000.00 cost per square meter area. It has been recommended that construction commences when the full amount of construction cost has been raised, to avoid project delay.
  2. The Committee has also agreed to take some "radical" measures in the implementation of the Bahay Teresa design, to ensure that all the core principles of the project are upheld: Function, Form and Sustainability.
    1. We shall limit the spaces to be accommodated in the Bahay Teresa to those that are necessary in the present operations of the STAA. Each of the spaces should be able to function in various ways at a given time or at different schedules.
      1. STAA Office (31.0 sm) - for administrative work and clerical tasks
      2. Lounge/ Kitchenette (13.0 sm) - for food and refreshments preparation and storage
      3. Conference Room/s (107.0 sm) - may accommodate more than 60 persons, or partitioned for 2 smaller groups (STAA Board Room)
      4. Indoor Garden (43.0 sm) - shall serve as a visual respite or and/or an actual meditation area
      5. Lanai (43.0sm) and circulation spaces/ walls & corridors (145.0 sm) - may also function as additional areas for gathering and private meetings (one-on-one’s or small groups of 3-4)
      6. Toilets (10.0 sm) - separate for men and women, accessible to all areas
      7. Theresian publications and art works shall be securely displayed in different areas of the Center (Office and Conference Rooms).
    2. Also, because of the height restriction imposed by the school, Bahay Teresa shall stand not more than 2 storeys, and with distance of not less than 10 m from the HS building line.
